What Is a LED
What is an LED and why is it such a big deal? A LED is a light source, which uses relatively low power to achieve an output that is much brighter than traditional filament bulbs. They work similar to a florescent light as in gases within the LED’s create light when electrical current is passed through rather than a filament burning up in an incandescent. Different gases contained with in the different LED’s cause different colors. Right now these types of lights can be pricey on the up-front cost but the cost savings through energy reductions can quickly make up for the extra costs. LED stands for light emitting diode.
LED’s were first discovered in the early 1900s but have been refined greatly over the years. They have been used on all sorts of basic appliances for years, where ever a need to see a display without actually putting off enough light to fill a room. On a tour through your own house you would see a lot of LED’s, on your phones, modems, printers, microwaves, ovens, alarm clocks, and untold other places. And like neon signs, led signs play a major part in modern advertising. Although the use grew to be widespread before the demand for these lights has boomer in recent years.
With the rise of energy prices and the low efficiency of standard incandescent bulbs, and the hazards of the more efficient compact florescent bulbs; there has been renewed interest and research on more practical uses for the LED’s and neon signs. Newer High Definition televisions are now illuminated with LED lights and make for a crisp clear image. Turn signals on cars and trucks are being converted into these new LED’s which flash brighter and faster, to draw more attention. Scientists are even using these lights to encourage photosynthesis in plants. The possibilities are endless. Now that you know a little more about LED’s, why should you care?
There are now a lot of consumer grade LED products that can really make your home shine. You can even buy replacement bulbs for your house with Edison bases(standard sockets), that will cut down on your lighting bill. Another high point of these lights is the longevity, these can burn for hundreds of thousands of hours before they need to be replaced. These lights are also used in accent and task lighting in areas that you would like to highlight in your home or yard. Although LED’s have been around for years, the advances being made in this field; make LED’s, like neon signs, a smart choice for smart consumers
